Chapter 44
To the chief Musician{H8764)} for the sons of Korah, Maschil{H8688)}. We have heard{H8804)} with our ears, O God, our fathers have told{H8765)} us, what work thou didst{H8804)} in their days, in the times of old.
How thou didst drive out{H8689)} the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst{H8799)} them; how thou didst afflict{H8686)} the people, and cast them out{H8762)}.
For they got not the land in possession{H8804)} by their own sword, neither did their own arm save{H8689)} them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour{H8804)} unto them.
Thou art my King, O God: command{H8761)} deliverances for Jacob.
Through thee will we push down{H8762)} our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under{H8799)} that rise up{H8801)} against us.
For I will not trust{H8799)} in my bow, neither shall my sword save{H8686)} me.
But thou hast saved{H8689)} us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame{H8689)} that hated{H8764)} us.
In God we boast{H8765)} all the day long, and praise{H8686)} thy name for ever. Selah.
But thou hast cast off{H8804)}, and put us to shame{H8686)}; and goest not forth{H8799)} with our armies.
Thou makest us to turn{H8686)} back from the enemy: and they which hate{H8764)} us spoil{H8804)} for themselves.
Thou hast given{H8799)} us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered{H8765)} us among the heathen.
Thou sellest{H8799)} thy people for nought, and dost not increase{H8765)} thy wealth by their price.
Thou makest{H8799)} us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
Thou makest{H8799)} us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.
My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered{H8765)} me,
For the voice of him that reproacheth{H8764)} and blasphemeth{H8764)}; by reason of the enemy{H8802)} and avenger{H8693)}.
All this is come{H8804)} upon us; yet have we not forgotten{H8804)} thee, neither have we dealt falsely{H8765)} in thy covenant.
Our heart is not turned{H8738)} back, neither have our steps declined{H8799)} from thy way;
Though thou hast sore broken{H8765)} us in the place of dragons, and covered{H8762)} us with the shadow of death.
If we have forgotten{H8804)} the name of our God, or stretched out{H8799)} our hands to a strange{H8801)} god;
Shall not God search this out{H8799)}? for he knoweth{H8802)} the secrets of the heart.
Yea, for thy sake are we killed{H8795)} all the day long; we are counted{H8738)} as sheep for the slaughter.
Awake{H8798)}, why sleepest{H8799)} thou, O Lord? arise{H8685)}, cast us not off{H8799)} for ever.
Wherefore hidest{H8686)} thou thy face, and forgettest{H8799)} our affliction and our oppression?
For our soul is bowed down{H8804)} to the dust: our belly cleaveth{H8804)} unto the earth.
Arise{H8798)} for our help, and redeem{H8798)} us for thy mercies' sake.
